Software construction is not unlike building construction.  Every project contains these 5 stages: Architect, Plan, Construct, Inspect and Maintain.

Plan.  A blueprint is produced within the parameters set out by the architecture.  This is the master plan that drives the construction phase. 

Construct.  A building code represents a set of widely accepted standards that are employed in the construction process.  The blueprint dictates what to build while the building code dictates how to build it.

Inspect.  The finished product must match the blueprint and regular inspections throughout the construction process guarantee this.

Maintain.  Ongoing maintenance and enhancements ensure that the finished product continues to fulfill  customer requirements.
