Over many years we have developed a system for controlling database jobs. This system involves using a master estimate to assure an on time, and on budget job. Our master estimate becomes a touchstone for us in completing a job. As we finish a task or object on the estimate we take credit for it by recording the original hours planned as now the hours earned. For example, say we complete a Screen Object that has been scoped to take 4 hours, when it is completed we write 4 hours in the earned column. If it really took us 6 hours to complete the initial coding of this object we could quickly tell you that we are having a problem with our job. We could do this by dividing the number of hours earned by the number of actual hours, and in our example yeilds a ratio of 1.5. Any A/E ratio above 1 indicates a job that is taking longer than expected, and likewise any A/E ratio under 1 indicates a job that is coming out under budget. We have used this tool on every one of the databases we have created, and its usefulness is unmatched.

The other service that Affordable Information provides is that our Project Manager is always a programmer. There are no tasks or objects listed on the Master Estimate that the Project Manager cannot complete. Therefore the programmers helping in the project cannot take credit for something that is not thoroughly completed.

Every two weeks Affordable Information provides our clients with updated Master Estimates showing our A/E ratio and how we are progressing on the job. Also, our employees do not get paid unless their timesheets match the hours they have recorded on the estimate.
